WOODSIDE CONDUCTED TO RENEWABLE HYDROGEN IN TASMANIA
Australia’s leading energy producer Woodside has secured land for its H2TAS hydrogen plant project, marking a new milestone in the company’s plans for large-scale production of renewable hydrogen and ammonia.
The land is a partially cleared site within the Austrak (Long Reach) Business Park, in the Bell Bay area of âânorthern Tasmania. Woodside and Austrak have entered into an exclusive option for a long-term lease.
H2TAS is an incremental development with the potential to support up to 1.7 gigawatt (GW) of electrolysis for the production of hydrogen and ammonia. The initial phase would have a capacity of up to 300 megawatts (MW) and a target production of 200,000 tonnes per year (tpa) of ammonia, corresponding to forecast customer demand.
H2TAS would use a combination of hydro and wind power to create a 100% renewable ammonia product for export as well as renewable hydrogen for home use.
In January 2021, Woodside signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Tasmania, which underscored the Tasmanian government’s support for the H2TAS project. The state recognizes the value of developing a hydrogen hub in the Bell Bay region that capitalizes on Tasmania’s advantage in renewable energy production.
Woodside announced in May 2021 a project consortium under an agreement with Japanese companies Marubeni Corporation and IHI Corporation. The parties have completed the first feasibility studies and concluded that it is technically and commercially possible to export ammonia to Japan from the Bell Bay area.
Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill said H2TAS aligns with the company’s strategy of developing new energy projects that are customer-driven and scalable according to market demand, adding products and services low-carbon emissions to its international portfolio of world-class energy assets.
âH2TAS is already attracting interest from existing and potential Woodside customers in Asia and Europe.
âCombined with our historic H2Perth project announced last month, H2TAS will help position Australia as a world leader in this emerging industry.
“It is important to note that this project would also create local jobs in construction and operation and new opportunities for Tasmanian businesses,” she said.
Woodside is targeting a final investment decision in 2023, with construction and commissioning expected to take approximately 24 months.
